Fairy Tale Friday #14: Face Off

So this week I've been watching SyFy Channel's reality competition show called Face Off which is hosted by McKenzie Westmore. (Yay, I used to watch the actress on the soap opera Passions when it was still on air!) This show is like Project Runway or Top Chef but it involves special effects makeup. It's awesome to see these contestants using their imagination and creativity to come up with these creature designs each episode.

So why am I talking about this show? Why is this related to fairy tales?

Well, for the season 1 finale, the theme is re-imagined fairy tales. The final 4 contestants must re-imagine two characters from classic fairy tales along with a genre.

Post-Apocalyptic Little Red Riding Hood
Psychedelic Little Mermaid
Industrial Hansel and Gretel
Haunted Frog Prince

Man, these contestants are amazing with their creativity. My favorite has to be the Hansel and Gretel one because it's so creative! The Witch and Gretel are so creepy to look at! Look at the different metal scraps sticking out of the Witch's back or the fullness of Gretel's chipmunk cheeks!

You can watch the Season 1 finale on Hulu here: (Warning: This is the final episode of Season 1 so you'll see who's the winner.)

I also started watching the first episode of Season 2 which is a re-imagining of Wizard of Oz. They have to re-imagine the 4 characters from the fairy tale: Tin Man, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Wicked Witch. It's a team challenge, pitting men vs women.

Women: Post-Apocalyptic/Tribal Wizard of Oz

Men: Horror Wizard of Oz

I gotta say, I loved the women's concept. It's so cool, especially the look of the Wicked Witch and the Scarecrow. With the men, I wish they have gone with their other idea, Steampunk. That would have been awesome to see these characters set in that genre.
